Reading Recommendations:
Wealth of Nations
Adam Smith's (1723-1790) ground-breaking book on free trade and market economics. Want more? Try the Adam Smith Web site.
Leviathan
The full title of Thomas Hobbes' (1588-1679) signal work about social contracts is Leviathan, The Matter, Forme and Power of a Common Wealth Ecclesiasticall and Civil. It's worth studying, if only to understand the context of his famous line "solitary, poor, nasty, brutish and short".
